Many headaches can be traced back to tension. This can be the case with some Migraine headaches as well.

If you find that your shoulders are tense or tight across your shoulder blades then it generally means that you are tense.

Begin by making yourself aware of the tension. When you feel it there simply let your shoulders drop. Keep doing this every time you are aware of the tension. Teach yourself to do this every time you feel tense. Also begin to use a good seating posture.

If you have the time at work or in the home do the following.

Sit and close your eyes. Hold your body tense. Then release.

You may find it easier to focus on one area of muscles at a time.

Begin with the feet and work upwards tensing and releasing each group of muscles.

Some people with joint or other muscular problems may find this method uncomfortable. If so I enjoy using the progressive relaxation below.

Progressive relaxation

Put some relaxing music on at a low level, turn off your phone, chase away the children. Then sit in a comfortable place.

Allow yourself to breathe a few full, comfortable breaths.

Now focus upon your toes. Imagine relaxing them. Imagine the relaxation spreading through your feet to your heels.

Take the relaxation up into your lower legs.

Do all this at a pace that you are comfortable with.

Continue to focus of areas of you body relaxing them as you go.

Eventually reaching the top of your head.

Allow any thoughts in your mind to drift off. Focus on the good feeling in your body.

Keep this state for about 10 mins.

A guided progressive relaxation CD could help. Or record one for your self stepping through each of the stages and getting yourself to focus on the different areas.

A good relaxing CD can help to deepen relaxation.
